A writers page block
I have been writing for years. I remember feeding paper into the typewriter, bashing on the keys and listening for dings.
I do not remember, typing page numbers as being much of a difficult task.
When we all became clever, and transitioned to use computers - did anyone stop to think how easy it could be to add page numbers to documents?
This week, I decided after 30 years, that I would rely on Microsoft Word to do the numbering for me. Two days later I remain still trying. Tonight was another 3 hours trying to understand how to make page 1 begin on page 2.
Why is it so complicated? How about you place your cursor on a page corner and hit ‘Start Page Numbers Here’? Do you think that was suggested and the head of design said, “no let’s include section breaks, pagination and hide/show buttons. It will ultimately teach global patience and or confusion, and prevent writers from rejection, as they will stop trying to write.”
I am rejected by my words, please don’t let the page numbers be the reason!
I currently have pages running from o, then nothing, then o and then 1. Which is better than an hour ago when all the pages were number 20. I have clicked on ‘insert’ and ‘different page’ as much as I’ve been grinding my teeth and I still cant do it!
The video tutorial, with a very patient man explaining, doesnt help. In fact I now have page and section breaks everywhere, which I can not currently remove.
Doing this is as hard as, self check outs, putting air in your tyres and finding the tv show you started yesterday and now can’t watch, unless you subscribe to yet another channel.
This explains why ten minute plays, with a ten page maxium, are so popular, because you can justify typing the numbers in yourself!
Similar to Pinocchio, I will become a real writer when I get brave, truthful and find the link for “How to get page numbers without losing your sanity!”. I can only wish on a star.
Please note: no laptops were harmed during the writing of this blog.
